In today's competitive world, it is very tough to stay in market as a good manufacturer. So to stay in market as a manufacurer, one must strongly focused on Quality of product. Customer nowdays strictly demand quality product. In this article we will come to know what is Quality all about and what is Quality department in mechanical engineering. Topics covered are :-

  • What is Quality

  • What is Quality department

  • What is Quality Control

  • What is Quality Assurance

What is Quality

Quality is the degree of excellence of something. In other words, it is the closeness of perfection of any manufactured product with respect to required value or specifications. In manufacturing industries, when they recieve any order from customer then the prime focus of any manufacturer is to achieve quality of product by fullfilling all the requirements of customer so that the final end product manufactured can be delivered to customer without any flaws / defects.

The Department which is responsible to achieve Overall Quality of product in any organization is Quality Department. It takes care of all the activities which are done to maintain the quality of product. Quality department performs inspections at different Operations performed on product during manufacturing process. Quality engineers or supervisors are deputed at each stages to inspect the part which is going to manufacture as per the requirement dimensions or specifications.

If they found any discrepancy in part's dimensions or visuals during the manufacturing process, they may stop the production or reject the part so that defective part can not be manufactured or delivered to customer which further may leads to faith of customer towards organization.

So, Quality department's prime responsibility is to deliver right product to customer. Further, there are two domains of quality department which is explained in detail below :

  • Quality Control

  • Quality Assurance

Quality Department

Quality Control

Quality Assurance

Quality Control, as name suggest it controls the quality of product. Now lets understand in detail what it mean. Suppose any product X is going to manufacture in an organization and it is under machining process. During machining that product falls beyond its required dimension value. Now during inspection stage, quality engineer observes variation in part dimension and immediately will come into action to control this variation by mean of correction. So quality control is to control the variation observed  during manufacturing process and has following approach :

  • QC takes reactive action

  • It focus on Correction

  • It is a product based approach. focus on product

  • QC is departmental approach

Quality Assurance, as name suggest it gives the assurance of quality of product. Now lets understand in detail what it mean. Suppose any product X is going to manufacture in an organization and it is under machining process. So we need to ensure that our processes are upto mark so that product which is going to be manufactured can not meet any discrepancy dimensionally or visually. So to achieve this, a cross fuctional team has been prepared which makes the fool proof system of manufacturing, inspection & reporting so that final product manufactured can be free from any defects. So, Quality Assurance gives the assurance of product before manufacturing by setting up the systems and has following approach :-

  • QA takes proactive action

  • It focus on Prevention

  • It is a Process based approach. focus on Process

  • QC is CFT (Cross functional team from various departments) approach

Conclusion

Hence, Quality department contributes major role in achieving high quality product. Quality Control and Quality assurance provide strong platform to make fool proof system which leads to manufacture defect free product which helps customer to get satisfied with the delivered product and help manufacturer to minimize the waste and increases the productivity of product.
