In this article you will learn about Different Roles and Responsibilities of design engineer in design department. As discussed in previous article about Product Manufacturing Cycle, How any product is manufactured in an organization. Its a Systematic approach having following steps :
Customer Requirement
3D Models / Assembly
Manufacturing Drawings
Raw material Purchasing
Purchased material inspection
Machining
Testing
Assembly
Testing
Packing
Dispatch

To fullfil all above requirements of Product Manufacturing Cycle, there are activities which need to be done against all these requirements. So, Design Engineer plays an important role to fulfill all these requirements in the form of following activities :
Technical specifications/datasheet is prepared to identify Customer requirements.
To recognize the shape, dimension & aesthetic of product, 3D models & assembly is prepared.
GAD - General Assembly Drawing is prepared for Customer approval on product to be manufactured.
For Material purchasing & Part machining/manufacturing, Manufacturing drawings and Bill of material (BOM) are prepared.
Reference of drawings issued, standrads are taken to test the material and product.
Provide Technical support to other department during complete operation process of product.
Perform Risk assesment (DFMEA- Design failure mode effect analysis) to mitigate risk during design stage.
Fill ECN-Engineering change note when there is any need of change in drawing.
Conclusion :
Design Engineers take care of all design related activities in product manufacturing cycle starting from Technical Specifications - 3D Models - Manufacturing Drawings - General assemly drawing (GAD) - Bill of Material (BOM) - ECN. During New product development, design department is responsible for all activities till Prototype. After Completion of Prototype, complete design pack is handover to production department for mass production.
